Sotera Defense Solutions is a mid-tier government contractor that delivers a range of systems, solutions and services to support the missions of United States national security customers.
Sotera’s areas of expertise include data fusion and analytics, cyber network operations, mission IT solutions, tactical ISR and intelligence analysis and operations and their customers include organizations in the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and Federal Law enforcement.
History/Timeline
Sotera Defense Solutions was founded in 1969 as Sachs Freeman Associates (SFA), a provider of technology services to the federal government. In 1988, SFA acquired Frederick Manufacturing and, in 2003, it acquired The Analysis Corporation (TAC). On February 9, 2007, Global Technology Strategies, Inc. acquired SFA and the company was renamed Global Strategies Group (North America) Inc., or GNA.
In July 2009, GNA became Global Defense Technology & Systems, Inc. (GTEC) and in November GTEC announced an initial public offering of its common stock (IPO) on The Nasdaq Global Market. The former parent company, Global Strategies Group, continued to be a significant shareholder.
On October 1, 2009 GTEC completed the acquisition of Zytel Corporation a provider of cyber network operations for the national security community. Zytel is now part of Sotera’s Cyber Systems & Solutions business serving U.S. Government customers in the Fort Meade, MD area.
On December 20, 2009 the company completed its acquisition of Signature Government Solutions, LLC and expanded its footprint within the U.S. Intelligence Community and its capabilities in information systems architecture, cyber security and network engineering. Signature is now part of Sotera’s Mission IT business.
In April 2011, GTEC was acquired by Ares Management and rebranded as Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc. (Sotera). In September of the same year, Sotera acquired Software Process Technologies, LLC which is also part of the Cyber Systems & Solutions business.
Sotera most recently acquired Potomac Fusion, Inc. at the end of 2011. Potomac Fusion operates today as Sotera’s Data Fusion & Analytics business

2012 GovCon Contractor of the Year (greater than $300 million) - In November 2012, Sotera was named Contractor of the Year (greater than $300 million) at the 10th Annual Greater Washington Government Contractor Awards sponsored by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, Professional Services Council and Washington Technology Magazine.
2010 ACG Deal of the Year - Global Defense Technology & Systems, Inc. won the Association for Corporate Growth National Capital Chapter’s Deal of the Year (< $100 million) award.

In 2012 Sotera, together with the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation donated $10,000 to the Fisher House Foundation. Sotera and USGIF raised the money through a fundraiser held during the GEOINT Symposium.
Sotera's Second Annual Charity Golf Tournament, held in June 2012, raised over $31,000 for Wounded Warrior Project.
