SOSMentor is certified 501(c)3 non-profit organization, as can be seen on Guidestar, and was founded in 2000 by Robert and Carole Donahue. Originally designed as a college readiness program, SOSMentor later evolved into two distinct programs: College Knowledge and ShapeUp. The Donahues recognized the need for a successful mentoring model and thus recruited dedicated and committed individuals to join SOSMentor in their endeavor. The SOSMentor Board of Directors bring with them their expertise from a wide variety of backgrounds, including business, registered dietitians, fitness and nutrition, public relations, law, and media. SOSMentor combats childhood obesity and malnutrition while educating and motivating Los Angeles’ underserved youth through an after-school program that stands apart from other local standard model mentoring programs. SOSMentor's strategy uses trained adult mentors to help youth develop and maintain positive behaviors, by providing proven scientific based nutrition information for healthy eating choices as well as providing information about the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily life. Health professionals facilitate SOSMentor's structured curriculum. Lessons are interactive and graduate dietetics students and volunteers mentor high school students while training them to become mentors to elementary school students. A weekly physical activity component educates, teaches, and motivates youth on how to exercise without a gym. This year SOSMentor began a Parent Program in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell Branch to provide nutrition literacy to parents. Partners SOSMentor has partnered with many after-school programs and corporate sponsors to run successful programs from 2000 - 2009. After-School Agencies 1. A World Fit For Kids 2.
