Sophia Peer

Sophia Peer is a New York-based director, writer, and editor born and raised in Flushing, Queens. She received her B.A. from SUNY Purchase and her M.F.A. in Film/Video from the School of Visual Arts, New York.
Music Videos and Short Films
In addition to directing and editing commercials, Peer has created over a dozen music videos for bands including The National, Paramore, Yeasayer, Interpol, Ponytail, Junior Boys, and Julien Baker. Her short films have been shown at the Whitney Museum of Art, Anthology Film Archives, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Sculpture Center, Interstate Projects, Kate Werble Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, The Queens Museum, and MoMa. According to Peer, her films often focus on real and fictional characters "who wouldn’t typically be considered camera-ready and present them as the heroes they are." The series has been described as “if the characters from The Departed were queer and on an episode of Chef’s Table.” Through various scripted scenes exploring women's roles on camera, Annie acts both in jobs as an actor and in her real life story, which includes 12-step programs, five marriages, and jail time.
Who's Annie? was a recipient of the 2019 New York Foundation for the Arts NYC Women's Fund for Film, TV and Theater, accepted into The Gotham's Episodic Lab fellowship program in 2019, and is a finalist in the ScreenCraft Film Fund in fall 2021.
