Sleep to Live Institute

Formerly known as the Sleep to Live Research Center, the Sleep to Live Institute is a research and development division of Kingsdown Inc., that investigates the impact that the sleep environment, behavior, and related equipment have on sleep quality in humans. The 9000 square foot complex is comprised of both engineering facilities and a sleep laboratory. A central goal of the institute is to conduct large-scale research for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals. Recent projects have looked at the effects of mattress firmness on various measures related to sleep quality. They are currently working on a study in collaboration with doctors at Duke University to study people with significant chronic pain.
History
In the 1990’s, Kingsdown Inc. invested in a mattress innovation developed at Leggett & Platt (L&P) that analyzed a person’s body type and assigned it to an appropriate firmness of mattress. Marketed as the DormoDiagnostic device, it was the first computerized system to try to scientifically determine the best sleep surface for any body type. The product proved to be successful and over 1200 systems were distributed to retailers throughout the world.
In the 2000’s Kingsdown’s CEO, Eric Hinshaw moved to change the corporate identity from strictly bed manufacturing to one of also promoting the relationship of sleep and overall health and wellness., development of new products including the 2nd generation of diagnostics (BodyDiagnostics), and the creation of the Sleep to Live Institute.
In 2007, the innovators responsible for the diagnostic design’s developed at L&P, Dr. Robert Oexman and engineer, David Scott, were recruited to found the Institute in Joplin, MO.
