Geoff Sizer

Geoff Sizer, FIEAust (born Geoffrey David Sizer, 5th October 1956, Adelaide, South Australia) is an Australian engineer, inventor and entrepreneur.
History
Sizer was born during the baby boom to a family-tree predominately educated as teachers. As such he pursued an eagerness to learn and share knowledge from an early age.
Growing up during the start of the solid-state electronics boom (for example the invention of the transistor), Sizer was keenly interested in the technological developments in electronics that were taking place and became heavily involved in electronics hobbyist activities, balanced by school holidays spend boating and fishing.
This interest would lead him to study at Adelaide University, where he earned a first class honours double-degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Upon graduation, Sizer moved to Sydney, where employment opportunities in his areas of interested appeared most plentiful. Add to this his passion for boating, with which the waterways around Sydney would prove to be a place of enjoyment and relaxation.
Sizer's formative years in Sydney were spent at the AWA research laboratories in Sydney. Early career highlights include development of Australia’s first Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer, participating in early optical fibre trials including laying cables under Sydney Harbour, mastering fusion splicing and developing defence products such as battlefield communications systems, airfield control tower systems and shipboard intercom equipment.
Sizer then moved to IC design as a part of Australia’s first Multi-Project Chip development with AWA, while also being involved in many other 8085-based firmware projects - including hand-coded machine language applications to prove to his management that "we can do it", which would lead AWA to acquire an early microcomputer-based cross-assembler system to speed firmware development.
During his career Sizer has acted as a Director or Chief Technical Officer for several leading technology firms including Advanced Systems Research Pty Ltd (inventors and developers of the spread-spectrum-based Quiktrak vehicle tracking system), Advanced Spectrum Technologies Pty Ltd, EMC Assessors Pty Ltd, Telezygology Inc and Embertec Pty Ltd.
Inventions and patents
Over the course of his career, Sizer has applied for and been granted a large number of patents for several ground-breaking inventions. In particular, his work in the area of enhancing the accuracy and temperature-stability of spread-spectrum radio technologies, which is in wide-spread use in telecommunications networks today (GPS systems and mobile CDMA telecommunications for example). Other key areas of invention include intelligent networked fastening technologies that have been deployed in passenger airliners and automobiles. Current Activities
Involvement in public affairs
As a former President of the IREE, Sizer was instrumental in the formation of the ITEE College in Engineers Australia, in the latter of which he held the office of chairman.
Sizer is currently a Fellow and board member of Engineers Australia, and is registered on the National Professional Engineers Register. Through this channel he is an active and staunch advocate for the indigenous Australian engineering industry.
Business
In 1991 Sizer founded Gestech Pty Ltd, a leading electronics design consultancy, and later formed Genesys Electronics Design Pty Ltd which took over Gestech’s operations. He is currently the CEO and Chairman of Genesys. Through his business he seeks to support and maintain the Australian engineering industry, giving opportunity to bright young students and engineers through his commercial operations, as part of "giving back" to an industry that has supported his own career.
