The term first use can be traced to a book by the same title published in 2015. It is referred as loosely defined set of sketching tricks and drawing paradigms that help visualize ideas. Sketch Thinking was developed as a quick way to gain sketching skills that are particularly beneficial to the outcome of a Design thinking workshop as the lack of sketching fluency is known to affect the creative output. Graphic fluency refers to develop a graphic vocabulary as a thinking language where the building blocks are to sketch human emotions, to sketch basic shapes, the ability to organize visual sketches by means of containers for ideas such as vignettes and boxes and the ability to storify a visual argument by means of arrows and other flow creating shapes. Emotion expression refers to prioritize the visualization of user's emotions rather than objective facts. For example, if the concept of music should be sketched a user feeling happy while listening to headsets is preferred to sketching a pair of headsets.
