Sketch London

Sketch London is an annual art competition that was founded in 2008. The contest was initially promoted through The London Sketch Club and the University of the Arts London, but soon the promotion was added to a number of social networking sites and the organisers decided to open the inaugural competition to all comers.

Entrants are asked to send in a sketch that they feel best suits that year’s design brief. The organisers decided on a sketch competition as this was the most appropriate art form to highlight the fast-paced flow of city life.

There is a cash prize for winning Sketch London but to most entrants this is secondary to the knowledge that the winning design will be transformed into an Oyster Card ticket wallet and distributed at major London rail stations. This is an excellent way for art students to enhance their portfolio and for up and coming artists to get their name and style into the public arena.

Background

Sketch London is organised and sponsored by last-minute accommodation specialists Wotif.com. When asked about the reasons behind the promotion European Marketing GM James Coulbault has said…

Wotif.com was founded in Australia in 2000 and opened their London office in 2003. The site attracts over 3.2 million visits every month and now has offices in Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the Argentina. Sketch London is one of the campaigns that the company is using to support it's continuing international growth.

History

Winners

2008

Alec Shelmerdine was the first ever winner of Sketch London . The brief for this year was “Escape the City” and Alex created an image showing people floating out of the city (specifically Westminster and Parliament Square). The design is possibly inspired by the form of travel used in Second Life.
