Sir Daniel Fortesque

Sir Daniel Fortesque ( born in 1250 died in 1286) is a character in the MediEvil series of video games. He appeared in MediEvil (PlayStation, 1998), MediEvil II (PlayStation, 2000), and the remake of the original game, MediEvil Resurrection (Playstation Portable, 2005).

Daniel Fortesque, possibly Scottish (who will be referred to as Dan) was a knight, serving under King Peregrin of Gallowmere, who eventually made him Commander of the Army. His position was an honorary one, however. Regardless, Peregrin enjoyed stories, and Dan excelled at telling stories. However in the year of 1286, Zarok, an evil wizard and former advisor to Peregrin returned from forced exile, due to his experiments concerning the dead. During his time, he had created legions of the Undead and demonic creatures in order to conquer the realm of Gallowmere. King Peregrin organized a grand army, and Sir Dan was selected to lead them as captain.

When Zarok's armies fired the first round of arrows, Dan was struck in the eye and died in the first charge. The battle continued on without him, and Zarok was eventually defeated. King Peregrin, determined to make Dan's memory last, told them all a skewed version of the events of the battle, in which Dan successfully led the Peregrin's army to victory and defeated many demons. He claimed Dan was struck in the eye (which was true) whilst doing battle with Zarok, eventually killing him with his dying breath (which was a lie). In reality, Zarok had escaped near the end of the battle. The King's men erected a crypt for Dan, and placed him in it, where he lay for the next century, celebrated as the hero of Gallowmere.

100 years after Dan's ignoble death, in 1386, Zarok returned and cast a spell to bring perpetual darkness upon Gallowmere. He then proceeded to rob the living of their free will, and resurrect the dead, providing him with yet another new demonic army. In doing so, however, he unwittingly brought Sir Dan back from the dead. Dan traveled throughout Gallowmere, dispatching various monsters and ghoulish apparitions, eventually catching up with Zarok. Dan finally managed to defeat him. But, in his despair, Zarok caused his warlock castle fortress to collapse, killing himself in the process. Dan managed to escape with the help of a giant eagle, and went back to his crypt. Finally finding peace, he died.

(Note: If the game is completed properly, Dan is seen in an in-game cinematic joining his comrades in the Hall of Heroes, a resting place for great warriors of history.)

500 years later, in the Victorian era, London. In 1886, a man known as Lord Palethorn finds the spellbook of the evil Warlock Zarok, and casts the same incantation that Zarok did 5 centuries earlier. Once again, Dan is awakened from his rest, this time inside a museum in London, England. When he awakens, he almost immediately finds a new ally in Winston, a ghost that died around the age of ten, who is in the service of the Professor, a mad scientist known for great gadgets such as the Time Machine, and Kiya, one of the ten thousand wives of Ramesses II, who becomes a love interest for Dan. Dan once again quests throughout the land (previously known as Gallowmere) to rid it of evil, battling many bizarre creatures, even traveling through time to defeat his enemies and right wrongs. He eventually corners Palethorn in Cathedral Spires, refusing his offer of power and restored humanity. Palethorn retrieves the last page of the spell book and summons a titanic, monstrous blue demon. The demon turns on Palethorn after repeated attacks on it made by Dan however, and knocks his flying machine out of the sky, pinning Palethorn to the ground. The demon is then destroyed after the act and is sent back to hell. Palethorn then seemingly reveals his true intentions of using Zarok's spellbook, which turn out to be world domination anyway. Palethorn then drops a time bomb just as he dies in a last ditch effort to kill Dan. This causes the area to explode, but Dan and his friends escape safely, and Dan and Kiya died happily ever after.

Note: If the game is completed properly, a confusing ending is seen where Dan and Kiya take off in the Time Machine to Dan's time, where they see a cross between Zarok and Palethorn about to attack them inside Zarok's arena inside his castle fortress.

Sir Dan's most notable feature (beyond being dead) is his utter lack of a lower jaw, making it impossible for him to speak properly in the games, where his voice is rendered as mumbles.

MediEvil Resurrection is a remake storywise to MediEvil, but many things, such as level layout and minigames, have changed drastically.
