simpleSAMLphp is an implementation of the SAML 2.0 protocol made in PHP by the Feide. As such, it is a federated identity system which deals with the Single sign-on Access Control method.
It won a IDDY Award from Liberty Alliance in 2008. Quoting from Liberty: "IDDY Award winners are some of the organizations driving over one billion Liberty-enabled identities and devices in the marketplace today."
It is meant to be a simple but secure implementation. As an example, the installation of simpleSAMLphp can consist only of the copy of a folder to a web server (typically an Apache HTTP Server) public folder.
simpleSAMLphp was presented at the TERENA 2008 Conference (avaliable here).
