Silvia Emme is an Italian sand animation artist. Biography and Education Born on March 4th 1978 in Recanati, Silvia Emme attended painting classes with Nando Carotti for three years, starting when she was in third grade. Given her talent for drawing, this proved a wonderful introduction to art as a discipline to be discovered and explored. After finishing Junior High School, she enrolled in the Ancona Art Institute where she encountered electronic imaging and graphics. She was, however, unsatisfied by the five years there and, feeling the need to return and find her own path with older techniques, she enrolled in the painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Macerata. The medium of paint was still not sufficient for Silvia and, after only one year, she changed course and successfully embraced the various disciplines of art restoration. Silvia believes that art is a way of representing concepts in such a way as to be within everyone’s reach. To do so, expression has to be simple, not limited to one language alone but speaking in all of them. During her years at the Academy and through meeting other students attending different courses, Silvia tried out many of these ‘languages’ and finally met and experimented with sand. Easy to obtain, free, soft and comforting to the touch. The medium was easy to choose - how to use it was another matter. Sand Animation is the result of the sum of the experience Silvia gathered over her years of study and is as technical as it is primitive in its universal language. Silvia calls her art Sand Animation and not Sand Art because the moving sand makes sense as a subject that is continually changing. Her fingers are her brushes and she uses all ten of them during each performance. Sand Animation as Work March 2011 sees the start of Sand Animation as Silvia’s true occupation with performances at public and private events. She works with the most prestigious Italian and international companies.
