Silhouettes and Cigarettes
|
Silhouettes and Cigarettes is a 2008 independent film directed by Bobby Buccellato, who also co-wrote and stars in the film. The film stars Buccellato as his alter ego Robert Croston and Erica DeCarlo as Rielly Anderson, Croston's main love interest. The film tells the story of Robert Croston, a student filmmaker, womanizer, pill popper and alcholic. Robert Croston recently discovers that he is suffering from heart failure and faces certain death if he does not take extreme medical care at once. He decides to not the medical advice from his doctor, but instead live out the last year of his life as usual. Till his on and off again girlfriend Rielly gets pregnant with his child and does his bestfriend's girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Miller). Now with two children on the way, he sets out to capture the final year of his life on film for his children.
The film is made as part mockumentary and part narrative. The film opens with a documentary of Croston made roughly three years after his death. It is later revealed that one of Croston's closest friend's was tasked by him to make this documentary. You see throughout the course of the film the viewer sees from a distance Croston writing down note, letters, and instructances for his loved ones. You find out that he gave his closest friends pages of detailed notes of how the documentary and the final year film was to be completed. The movie is mixed with elements of both the documentary, interviews with Croston's close friends, and Croston's own journey; that the audience is literally suppose to feel the life, death, and legacy of Robert Croston.
Death is a main theme of the film. Both Croston and his friend Joe (Rodriguez) die in the course of the film. But, also Croston's first love and parents have all passed on before the begining of the film which again comes full circle after Joe's death. But,the film seems more about what the presence of death does to our lives, then death itself. Croston's early drug use is due mainly to his parents death in a plane crash and then the suicide of his lover Julie. When Joe dies, he begins drinking again and has an affair with Amanda.
Production
The Film was made for a Budget of only two Thousand Dollars put together by it's producers Adam Baumel,Rafe Famularo, and Bobby Buccellato.
