Sikkim Manipal University Directorate of Distance Education was established in 2001 by the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences as part of its efforts to bring education to the masses to fulfill the growing demand for professionals.

SMU is university in Sikkim which is a joint venture between Government of Sikkim & Manipal Education to offer regular & Distance education programs.

The university is recognized by DEC, UGC, & Ministry of HRD to offer program in 9 disciplines. EduNxt

EduNxt is the next generation learning system that fully takes advantage of modern teaching techniques to create a virtual classroom where students come together to learn from distinguished faculty and each other. EduNxt makes it possible for students to collaborate on team-oriented learning tasks like assignments and case studies through audio, visual and IM aids.
EduNxt makes it possible for a student to self-learn. Learners of the same course can, for example, chat with each other and faculty members in real time to clarify their doubts or read faculty blogs and comment on them. The concept of mentoring means faculty members will be available as guides to hold student hand through the process of self-study.
