Part of the Community Access Program and located in the Bluewater building in the center of Sheet Harbour, The Sheet Harbour Cap Site has been serving the community since the late 90's. Although it's location has changed several times in recent years, it's always represented everything a Cap site should. History Founded in 1996 and partnered with North-Shore Internet Services, a small ISP that initially brought internet to the Sheet Harbour Area. in Dec 1998 it renamed itself to Bridge to Bridge Internet Society (BBIS) and built it's webpage to be totally community oriented. At it's peak BBIS had twenty-five 56k modems that were shared by the entire community to dial into the internet based out of a Duncan MacMillan High School maintenance closet under the name dunmac.com. The Actual Cap site was based out of the High School cafeteria, during the summer the few computers the school had were collected and placed on tables for people to come in and use them and see what the Internet was all about.
As the school gained more computers, a lab was eventually set up. The Cap Site now had the means to operate during the entirety of the year, every Tuesday night the lab was opened up and people could come in and browse the internet. Eventually the school attained a Digital Signal 1 internet connection and switched over to high speed internet, the cap site was now the only place in Sheet Harbour the public could use high speed internet.
In 2005 BBIS was unable to compete with Sympatico and had to shut down for good. In light of these events the dunmac.com domain name was retired and the few members left of BBIS founded sheetharbour.ca from the ashes. The cap site moved to the Bluewater Building now partnered with Job Search Services and focused on helping the unemployed. The new central location brought in more traffic, especially tourists looking to check their internet on the road.
Facility Equipped with 8 workstations for public use, the SH Cap Site has a variety of different services. All the workstations are equipped with Windows Vista, Microsoft Office, and a variety of other programs. Operated by Job Search Services throughout the year, during the summer months student grants provide a working environment for 1 - 3 students throughout the summer.
Services include: Websurfing, Instant Messaging, Printing, Scanning, Digital Cameras, Laptops, Digital Projectors
