Early Life
Shay Chan Hodges grew up in San Francisco. When she was six years old, her father campaigned as the first Chinese Supervisor for San Francisco. She now lives in Maui with her husband and two sons, and at one time owned a children's bookstore. Chan Hodges argues for "Family-Centered Design," a framework for designing our society and economy around the real needs of families, rather than the other way around. In 2014 she participated in the White House Summit on Working Families.
Politics
Chan Hodges is a longtime Maui Democratic Party member and local school board and water board member. In February 2015, Chan Hodges applied to replace deceased Hawaii state legislator Mele Carroll, but was not selected.
In June 2016, she launched a campaign for Congress in . She is challenging incumbent Democrat and Iraq War veteran Tulsi Gabbard, arguing Gabbard is not progressive enough to represent the district, which includes Maui.
The race elicited some controversy when Gabbard declined to debate Chan Hodges, drawing criticism in Hawaii media as well as national attention owing to Gabbard's own pointed calls for more debates in the 2016 Presidential primary campaign between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
