Shawn E. HibmaCronan (born September 19, 1985) is an American artist, sculptor, designer and maker living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. HibmaCronan creates movable, large scale, interactive sculptures from wood, steel, reclaimed and found objects. HibmaCronan is known for his moving sculptures that engage the viewer and activate the spaces they occupy. The aesthetic HibmaCronan creates is the result of utilizing materials in their natural form. HibmaCronan has exhibited at galleries and institutions including a solo exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California, The Basement Gallery, Sonoma State University, California Shakespeare Theatre and The Crucible’s Cathedral Gallery. His work resides in private and corporate collections including The North Face Inc., HyperArts, and has two pieces in the collection of Compass Books, on view at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). In 2012 HibmaCronan launched a multi-year sculpture project titled Love, Inertia, and the Pursuit of the Perfect Stance. The project will include restoring a 1963 Ford Falcon van to create a custom moving “street legal” sculpture that highlights American car culture. HibmaCronan has said about his work and process: “My work is meant to be picked up, poked at, sat in, and rolled around; providing a new experience as a reward for the curious and the bold. I want people to question their use intellectually and practically - to this end, physical and conceptual interaction is an absolutely necessary element of the work.” Life and Career Shawn E. HibmaCronan is one of two children born to graphic designer and artist Michael Patrick Cronan (June 9, 1951 - January 1, 2013) and artist and designer Karin Hibma in Oakland, CA. Cronan and Hibma are the founders of Cronan, a design and branding firm which is responsible for the design of brands including TiVo, Amazon Kindle and SFMOMA. HibmaCronan was raised in a family of artists, designers and craftsmen. At a young age his grandfather, a craftsman, taught HibmaCronan how to build and create. HibmaCronan graduated from California College of the Arts (CCA) with a double major in Sculpture and Furniture in 2009. After college HibmaCronan began teaching woodworking and sculpture at institutions including CCA and The Crucible. In 2013 HibmaCronan had a solo exhibition at the Oakland Museum of California that included his moving sculptures The Angler, Lois Frost, and Air Ride Chair.
