Shasta Shootout

Shasta Shootout
The Shasta Shootout is an annual competition among members (and occasionally friends) of the Israelsen family. The Shootout consists of three distinct phases. In the first phase, each competitor eats a raw hot dog. The second phase involves drinking an entire two-liter bottle of warm Shasta. Finally, each participant must run to a specified object and back. The object of the Shasta Shootout is the be the first person to fully complete all of these three things. Often the winner receives a substantial cash award.

History
This competition was created by John A. Israelsen and Dave Harrison in 1997. Dave described the creation of this event in the following way, "in the late 90's I was asked to be in charge of the reunion activities so after some idea's from friends at work we decided to do the Shasta shootout and a caramel apple eating contest. There were several of the apples that happened to be onion's so we had the three girls go first and started eating the apples, then after a three second count the boys started chomping hard on their "apples" and it wasn't until the third bite they realized they were eating onions. Needless to say that game only worked once, but the shootout was a hit. It was such a shock to the status quo, with such entertainment value as had never been realized before, that it has endured well over a decade. Despite numerous efforts to "clean up" the shootout, and having been left off of the schedule on many occasions, the shootout seems to have a life of it's own and has endured."

William Israelsen won this first contest. He also threw up entire carrots. It continued for years until the Israelsens took a break from the competition. It was revived in 2008. 2009 saw Gordon Geddes take first prize. 2010's winner was Nate Demonja.

Todd Jones has historically been the slowest competitor. One year he won the "Endurance Award" for his slow, but persistent effort. 2010 saw him take at least five more minutes than anyone else to finish the Shootout.
The posterity of Dwight Israelsen have been very successful in the Shasta Shootout. William won the inaugural event. Karl has claimed victory on three separate occasions. Ryan has also taken first place.
