Shapleigh Memorial School

Shapleigh Memorial School (Sometimes Referred to as SMS, Shapleigh Memorial, or Shapleigh Memorial Elementary School) is an elementary school that serves the students of the town of Shapleigh, Maine, with an approximite total of 205 students. The served grades are from K through 6. This school is part of Maine School Administrative District 57.

It is one of 3 schools in the dictrict to have an honorary name.

History
There were about 4 elementary schools in the town of Shapleigh before Shapleigh Memorial consolidated those schools.

Shapleigh Memorial School opened in the late 1950's, it later closed it's town high school and joined MSAD 57 when Massabesic High School opened in 1969.

Key Facts
*Every September, The 6th graders of Shapleigh learn town history, and go on field trips called "Bike Hikes", as they visit historical sites, Eskers, and experts. The bike hikes were founded by a former 6th grade teacher, and were passed on to others.
*Every spring, the 6th graders attend Camp Kieve in Nobleboro.
*Every year 5th and 6th graders compete in Modern Woodmen of America and Civic Orientation essay contests. There are several other school contests as well.
*In the past Shapleigh Memorial has also had an Odyssey of the Mind team compete at state finals, and then advance on to a world competition, placing around the middle of the 54 teams in their division and problem.
*The school was home to a student that went to the state Geography Bee twice.
*All computer technology within the school is relied on Macintosh.

==Music Makes A Difference! Program==
Shapleigh Memorial School is of the two elementary schools in the MSAD 57 district that sponsors the district's "Music Makes A Difference!" (or MMAD) program, which other schools in the district do not sponsor nor offer. Deborah Waterman is responsible for editing the MMAD webpage and keeping MMAD going. MMAD has the opportunity to invite local or world musicians to share what music means to people.

Teachers
There are many teachers at Shapleigh Memorial that have worked there for many years or over a decade. Some teachers haved retired from their grade teaching career and still work at the school in other school jobs, while others still continue to do a good job in their classrooms. The specialist teachers work in other elementary schools in the district.
