Shankar Narayan

Shankar Narayan (December 1, 1964 - ) is an internationally-known vegan activist of India. He has been a driving force in the new wave of vegetarian organizing or re-organizing in India that includes vegan advocacy and abolitionism.
He speaks frequently throughout India and surrounding nations (South and West Asia) on vegetarian and vegan topics and, with an evidence base and for a variety of reasons, urges the abolition of all animal agriculture.
Shankar Narayan led a team of local vegans and vegetarians in organizing the , held from September 30 to October 6, 2007, in Murdeshwar, Karnataka, India, and currently is President of the Indian Vegan Society and a Councilor of the International Vegetarian Union and its Regional Coordinator for India and for South & West Asia. In that role, he travels widely, lectures and organizes throughout West and South and India, and helps inspire and organize vegetarian conferences, such as the in Batan, held November 6-10, 2009.
The Indian Vegan Society (of which Narayan is currently President) operates a Sthitaprajna (Perfect Yogi) Vegan Life Centerconducts a Humane Education Program in two of India's many states - Goa and Karnataka. Since 2006 and with the help from PETA India, the IVS as the Humane Education Program has been offering secularized but religiously-sensitive humane curriculum development assistance to colleges and other schools. For now, the HEP school program is limited to Karnataka and Goa. The school resources of the Humane Education Program are available to all public or private schools in Karnataka and Goa.
The Indian Vegan Society hosts a number of vegetarian events, including several vegan music festivals, the , in Brazil.
They trace their spiritual and moral heritage to the UK's Donald Watson, ( with coining the word 'vegan' in or about 1944), and India's Mohandas K. Gandhi.
Shankar Narayan resides near Udipi, aka Udupi City, a major Hindu religious center in Karnataka which is quickly becoming a major economic center of the region. He was training as an accountant, by which has has earned his living in the past. He has for nearly a decade been a teacher (note the Humane Education Program, which he helped develop) and has a key organizer for the IVU's held in September 2006 in Goa, India, adjacent to his home state of Karnataka. He is married and has children, who are all healthy and happy vegans.

The Asian Vegetarian Union (AVU), an offspring of the International Vegetarian Union (IVU), was founded at the IVU's first meeting in Dresden, Germany, in 1908. The IVU itself represents a union of all vegetarian societies around the world.
