"SGMS (Stock Generated Market Share) methodology is a market research methodology specifically designed to quantify sales share, and related data. SGMS is based on the hypothesis that, over time, the aggregated share of visible inventory in informal/emerging retail channels closely matches sales share in such channels.Tests comparing SGMS stock counts against recognised retail audit methodology suggests that SGMS may offer a credible means of picking up market share in the so-called Informal, or Emerging retail trade sector. The method is being piloted in several African countries under the supervision of Frontline Research, a privately owned market research organization.
