Severed Fifth is a music project designed to explore how far a musician can take his music with the new economics of the music industry. It's a full solo Heavy Metal album written and being recorded by Jono Bacon and released under a Creative Commons license. The aim is to see whether it is feasable to support and sustain an independent musician without relying on a record label and traditional music industry methods in favor of embracing the new technology and ease and pervasive nature of the digital internet distribution. Jono plans on documenting the progress of the project to provide a resource for future artists faced with the decision of how to promote and monetize their own work. Jono is relying heavily on the Severed Fifth community to help make the project a success and has enlisted the help of several volunteers to help with all aspects of it, from financial and legal to products and promotion.
Although the project can be classified as part of the free culture movement, the target audience for the album, Denied By Reign, is ordinary music fans who may not necessarily be familiar with Free Culture.
