Finished With My Ex (Often stylized as: FWMX) are a Portuguese independent music act, whose genres variate from Alternative rock, garage rock to electronic rock, acoustic, industrial rock, formed in 2012 in Braga, Portugal. The band consists of founder and singer-songwriter Bruce Buckley (vocals, multi-instrumentalism), guitarist Chris (aka Lana Breivik) (guitar, multi-instrumentalism) and drummer Manuel Cunha. The band is influenced by bands such as Marilyn Manson, The White Stripes, etc., of which the two members try to capture some "sounds" while remaining faithful to the bands "originality and visual image." The band also makes use of red and black colors in their visuals. The band currently self-records and self-releases their work online for free download, usually through SoundCloud and BandCamp, under a Creative Commons License (usually BY-NC-SA), because "Studio time is extremely expensive and difficult to obtain." The band premiered their debut single, "Politics' Franchise Lovers", on 22 July 2012, during an interview to Radio Santiago of Guimarães and on July 31, 2012 it was made available for digital download through the band's SoundCloud and BandCamp profiles for free. On 7 August 2012, Bruce tweeted the possibility of re-recording "Politics' Franchise Lovers". On 28 August 2012, the band released an EP entitled Riding a Dead Horse, for free download through BandCamp. History 2012-present: formation and career beginnings Both fans of Marilyn Manson and both sharing the same passion for music, Bruce Buckley (Renato) and Chris (Cristiano) met through social networks at the beginning of 2012. They began to discuss the musical tastes of each other and decided to "make some music"... "some music" ended up becoming something else. So, they began a project: Finished With My Ex. "Well, does not mean literally, I ended up with my ex-girlfriend, but something like: I ended up with my former life, with my former past... is a break up with the past marking the beginning of a new era, starting from the zero", said Bruce, during an interview to Radio Santiago, of Guimarães. He also said that he had lyrics for the project even before he met Chris. Finished With My Ex released their first single "Politics' Franchise Lovers" on July 22, 2012. The song is a critique of how marketing and advertising are used and for what purpose. Despite the band described the song as very monotone, they said that the guitar's riff is actually very memorable, in fact, they defined that their project is more about "their message than the music structure itself". The song premiered during the band's interview to Rádio Santiago, during the radio's alternative music show "Submarino", on July 22, 2012. During the same interview, the band performed an acoustic version of a yet to be released song, titled "Funeral Of Hearts". On July 31, 2012, "Politics' Franchise Lovers" was made available for digital download through the band's SoundCloud and BandCamp profiles for free, released under a Creative Commons License (BY-NC-SA) since the band currently self-releases their songs online for download, because "Studio time is extremely expensive and difficult to obtain." An artist is able to experiment without necessarily spending the money to do it in an expensive studio. A complete proof of concept that a whole 'Do it yourself' CD production process - from beginning to end (including: recording, mixing, graphics, page layout, prepress, etc.) - can compete with professional quality, using exclusively Free Software, was made by the Austrian band XBloome in November 2010. The band makes much use of social networking websites such as Facebook to promote themselves since the beginning of the project. On August 5, 2012, the band revealed that due to great reception of their song "Funeral Of Hearts" in acoustic, performed live at the Submarino Showcase on July 22, they would released that same version as a promotional track for free download soon on August 20." On 7 August 2012, Bruce tweeted the possibility of re-recording "Politics' Franchise Lovers", he explained "Politics' wasn't a "big thing", I guess. Maybe we'll re-record it and then we'll see what we're gonna do with the new version..." On August 14, 2012, the band shared through social network websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, that drummer Manuel Cunha had joined the band. Riding a Dead Horse and new album On 28 August 2012, the band released an EP entitled Riding a Dead Horse, for free download through BandCamp, under a Creative Commons License. It features the band's debut single "Politics' Franchise Lovers", plus two demo versions of yet to be released songs ("Tramps" and "Riding a Dead Horse") and an acoustic version of "Funeral Of Hearts" (which was previously performed live during the band's interview to Submarino on 22 July). The release of the album was announced on 28 August 2012, and released on that same day a few hours later, it is currently available as Digital download through the band's BandCamp. The EP is an "introduction/preparation" for the band's forthcoming release, in which the band is currently working on. On November 27, 2012, Bruce posted a video on their Youtube channel and on other several social networking websites, where he explained: "we finally started working on the new songs that will be included on our next release! We also got a new member on the band, but i'm not going to say who he is for now. The old songs have been re-written and re-recorded. I think we're actually starting anew for the other songs... we've been collecting influences from what we've been listening to these last days. Don't ask me how things are going to be because we still very raw with the songs, but we promise we'll work hard to do our best". On that same day, the band posted a video titled "Rehearsal sessions #1: "Lost"", where we can listen to the band performing a song during their rehearsal. The band explains that "these "Rehearsal Sessions" are intended only to show our work during our rehearsals. No audio of these videos are the final versions of our songs". Music and image The band is influenced by bands such as Marilyn Manson, The White Stripes, Gossip, Nine Inch Nails, Franz Ferdinand, etc., of which the two members try to capture some "sounds" while remaining faithful to the bands "originality and visual image." Members Bruce Buckley Bruce Buckley is the stage name of Renato de Freitas, born in Guimarães, Portugal. Despite considering himself just the vocalist of the band, he also produces their songs and he composes some of the rhythm guitars for the songs (he also plays the bass, but not with the band). According to Bruce, he self-produced and recorded his first demo album in the summer of 2010, but the album was never published in any way." The main version is yet to be released)
