However, his fellow cadets are not happy about being led by a male cheerleader, and are afraid that he is now more loyal to the cheerleaders than to them. Historical Significance This film is a landmark production in the history of independent filmmaking. For the past century, filmmaking has been prohibitively expensive, and only those with access to large sums of money could make films. Sergeant Cheerleader has taken advantage of recent technological developments in digital editing software which has placed advanced film-making technology into the hands of the average citizen. The College of William and Mary is leading the field in the use of this new technology and is making the film Sergeant Cheerleader as a demonstration of the new methods to make films.
The film is also unique in that it has recruited the President of the College of William and Mary, W. Taylor Reveley, III as an actor. The film also recruited the Mayor of Williamsburg, Jeanne Zeidler
This is the first mainstream film which portrays Army ROTC in the core of its plot.
