Seneca Doss

Seneca Doss is an African-American Music Publicist/Writer. A native of Nashville, TN, he moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2000 after leaving Howard University in Washington, DC to pursue a career in music. In the early years things were rough. Upon moving to New York, he stayed in his friend’s mom's basement in Flatbush, Brooklyn. While in her home, he enrolled into Brooklyn College to major in Radio and TV. Enrolling in Brooklyn College would open many avenues for him to meet and connect with persons aspiring for the same goals as him. While at the school he majored in Radio and TV and took full advantage of the opportunities that BC had to offer, mostly the Internship/Career Services offices. It would be this office that would land him his first internship. As he was just getting started with searching for internships, problems with his residency began to erupt. His friend’s mom wanted him to move out because of her religious beliefs. So on a college student’s budget, “very little money,” finding an apartment in Brooklyn was a tough task, but with the assistance of funds from dad, he moved out and found a new home in East Flatbush with a Jamaican lady that was not a hardy type. He came across her rental listing around campus and soon moved in. Although he had a place to stay, Seneca would spend most nights sleeping in the student computer lab on campus because sharing space with the lady was miserable. His stay at her apartment only lasted for four weeks, and soon he would be back on the chase for another place to stay. On the day of his moving out, he rented a car and gathered his things from the apartment and set out to find a place to stay. So from 10am that morning up until 9pm, there was no luck. He drove to Queens, all around Brooklyn and would soon find himself driving to a friend’s house in Brooklyn just for a break. The friend’s house that he drove to was some one that he considered a good friend that he chilled with at Brooklyn College here and there. When he went to her house and she knew what was going on, she pleaded with her mom to let me stay at their house until he got things together. After a miracle, her mom said yes. From that point on, things got easier, but it wouldn't last. Days after settling in, he got back on the email and fax machine trail to send his resume out for internships. As the end of 2001 was approaching, the benefits of his hard work were beginning to make a difference. He had an interview offer from Columbia Records that went no where. Soon after, he had an interview set up with MTV, but it never happened because had changed his mind after he had heard some negative things about their internship program. It would take an email from HOT97 to make what was a crazy 2001, a bitter sweet victory. The urban radio giant granted him an interview with their promotions department. He thought the interview went well, but apparently it didn’t. On the same day as the interview, he pretty much figured out that he didn't get the internship, but luck was on his side that day. Because the very people that had interviewed him and turned him down, directed to him to go and meet the Director of Music Advertising. That meeting would end with him becoming an intern. With so much to look forward to in 2002, he was ready to put his ambition and persistence to the test. During the first few weeks of the internship, it was filled with just learning the ropes and knowing what to do. Things were going pretty good after three months until The Director of Music Advertising unfortunately passed away. This was a devastating blow because Seneca had so much respect for him and wasn't really sure what would happen next. Days after the funeral, Seneca would report to HOT Interactive (website division). In HOT Interactive he would do some amazing things like interview music artists. He was able to interview and photograph slain rapper Notorious BIG's mother Volletta Wallace during the fifth anniversary of his death. He was also able to write interview questions for India Arie, interview and photograph legendary singer Roberta Flack, Syro Gyro, Mike Phillips, Wayman Tisdale and Bobby Caldwell. After a few more months had passed into the internship, he applied for a street team position with Smooth Jazz station, CD101.9 and got the position.

Coming on board for CD101.9 was a cool thing for him because it gave him the feeling of short-term success. It also meant that he had valuable stepping stone to use in his later years. Doing street team meant going out to events and shows and promoting the station in a positive manner. One day while promoting the station during Harlem Week in 2002, Seneca met actor/choreographer Darrin Henson of "Darrin's Dance Grooves" and ShowTime series "Soul Food." He and Darrin struck a quick idea at what each other was all about. Seneca immediately saw Darrin as someone that can help him reach a new plateau. What ever that plateau was, he didn't exactly know yet, but he had a plan. They exchanged numbers and Seneca began making his pitches via phone to Darrin that he could help what ever projects he had going. The first commitment that Seneca to Darrin was assuring him that he could get him on KissFM with Lenny Green. Since KissFM, HOT97 and CD101.9 are all on the same floor and one company, pitching to Lenny Green to have Darrin on the show was rather easy. At the time, Soul Food was well known and Darrin was too. It was a perfect situation for both parties because Darrin’s demographics where Lenny Greens listeners. So Seneca setup everything, and Darrin appeared on "Kissing After Dark" with Lenny Green during a live feed at the Flamingo Club in Manhattan. This act alone made Darrin want to bring Seneca on as his Assistant. In Seneca he got a many elements. He got a go-getter and someone that was thirsty for success. As the months went by, Seneca did a lot of things to promote Darrin. At the time, Darrin had a calendar out that wasn't moving as quickly as he would have liked. When Seneca came on board, all that changed. Not including KissFM, every event that Seneca arranged was meant to promote his calendar. Seneca got him on XM radio, WBLS and WPGC radio in DC. Seneca was also the reason that the Hue-Man Bookstore bought a decent amount of his calendars to sell in their store. After the calendars were ordered, Seneca arranged for Darrin to come and do an in-store promotion for the calendars. Next Seneca would get Darrin down to DC for "The For Sisters Only" Convention. With all this going on, Seneca always referred to himself as a liaison when arranging these events, but what he was doing was hard-knock publicity. No school or formal training, just common sense and some thick skin. Working with Darrin had benefits. He met celebrities like Melinda Williams, radio host Egypt, Pharrell Williams, one time 106 & Park host A.J., Evander Holyfield and radio & television personality Tigger. But as much of an asset Seneca proved to be from the PR point of view, his short comings as Assistant was too much, and would end by him being dismissed.

Despite being let go by Darrin, Seneca learned a lot about himself. He learned that he had ability to do just about anything that he put his mind to. It wouldn't be to long after that he would start another internship with PR firm Excite Media. Excite Media ended really quickly though, and so did the luck with getting other positions. After Exite Media, it would be a full year before Seneca would do another internship. He always felt doing an internship was a gateway to getting a job and an escape clause to "just to getting in, learning something and getting out." His next internship would be based on gumption and persuasion. He wanted to intern for famed New York City restaurant Justin’s. His reasons behind wanting to intern at Justin's were perpetuated on the fact that he thought he would gain better management and organizational skills by being there. During this time, things were rocky at home. He was having problems with his girlfriend and he was coming up hard for cash to pay bills. But like a survivor, he knew that he had to keep moving forward despite what was going on at the present time. After 3 months, he and the GM became really cool, and he offered Seneca a job to be the restuarant host. It doesn't seem like much, but it did mean a lot to Seneca because despite everything that he was going through, his persistence paid off. During his stay at Justin's, he went on to do an internship at The Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn too.

Eventually he would be fired from Justin’s due to allegations by an intern from Bad Boy about something he claims was ridiculous, but he took the experience he learned at Justin's and used at BAM. At BAM he worked in the Membership Department. Known for being an artistic establishment, BAM gave Seneca plenty of inspiration to wanting to do things in multi-media. While still attending Brooklyn College, he organized his future entertainment company called 42 WORKS. 42 WORKS was meant to cover everything from TV, Film, Music, Management and Promotion. It was new to him, but very exciting. He applied for grants and got them. He used the money to pay for his business certificate, website, business cards and business banking account. He wanted to bring on a staff to help take 42 WORKS to the next level, but it never happened. Instead, he blew it by not having a solid plan to make things go better. At the same time, he burned some bridges with many of the persons that he had on the team. After everything was said and done, the only thing that he could do was chuck it as experience learned. Other than things going crazy with 42 WORKS, things at BAM were going pretty good. He was able to see Bruce Ratner announce the buy of the New Jersey Net's and the building of a Brooklyn Nets Arena at BAM. That event offered a chance to see Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Willis Reed and Jay-Z. With Jay-Z being there, it presented another avenue to making some things happen. So once the event was over, Seneca moved down stairs leading to the exit doors and timed the chance to meet Jay walking out with Beyonce. Once he got up on Jay, he tapped him on the shoulder and began making his pitch to how he would like for Jay to be his mentor. Jay just simply replied "I can't do it." Seneca continued to make his case to Jay, but in the mist of the chatter Jay said this too, "I can't make it easy for you!" Still to this day, those words resonate in his mind and affects his point of view on so many things that he strives to be apart of.

His internship with BAM eventually ended and working odd jobs at that time was real. Years later, he took on another internship with a Brooklyn based PR firm. That firm would be the last puzzle piece that would transform him to "The Beast," a phrase that he has been commonly called since going public. The Beast stems from owners of B Sharp Clothing calling Seneca that because of his results driven work ethic. After becoming a full fledged Publicist in 2007, Seneca went to work. Taking on a staggering eight clients at one time, he let his actions speak for it's self. In 2007, he garnished press in Allhiphop.com, Hip-Hop Connection, Black Beat Magazine, XXL Magazine and several other media's. After accomplishing so much because of his writing in PR, Seneca branched out and became as well and is a contributing writer for Hiphopruckus.com, AmalgamDigital.com and Starpulse.com. He's done interviews and album reviews on such people as Fat Joe, Vanessa Simmons, and A&R vet Wendy Goldstein.
