Sema Hernandez is a Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. Senate from Texas in 2020. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and a supporter of the organization's social platform platform.
Hernandez was previously a 2018 Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Texas.
History
2018 Texas Senate race
Hernandez was inspired to run for the Senate after watching a CNN debate between Ted Cruz & Bernie Sanders: “I was motivated to jump into the race to fight for our Human Rights before any more people die due to Ted Cruz's inhumane decisions.” She was characterized as being farther left on the political spectrum than her opponent O'Rourke, and was endorsed by popular alternative media TV show host Lee Camp.
Hernandez was able to gather a quarter million votes in the 2018 primary, but lost to her opponent on March 6, 2018. Unfortunately for the Texas Democratic Party, O'Rourke lost the election to his Republican opponent, Ted Cruz, in the general election.
2020 Texas Senate race
In September 2018, Hernandez was the first and only Democrat to announce her candidacy to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. Wendy Davis, M.J. Hegar and Rep. Joaquin Castro, are reportedly considering a run the Democratic nomination. The seat currently is held by John Cornyn.
Hernandez's candidacy has been covered by the popular progressive online alternative media outlet The Young Turks, which interviewed Hernandez on February 14, 2019.

* On February 17, 2019, Hernandez received an endorsement from Nina Turner, President of Our Revolution and Co-chair of Bernie Sanders's Bernie2020 presidential campaign.
