Select baseball is an increasingly popular alternative for youth baseball players wishing to play a higher level of baseball, to travel, or to receive top quality instruction. Most youth baseball leagues are open to players of all skill levels and incomes, coached by volunteers, and play other teams in the same city or local area. Select teams, on the other hand, may accept only highly skilled players, may charge fees for players to participate, may have professional coaches (frequently retired professional players), and may travel to play select teams in other cities. There is often the opportunity to participate in tournaments in other states or provinces. Select baseball is especially popular for players who aspire to play in high school, college, and professional leagues. A player may join a select team while still in middle school, receive a high degree of instruction on the finer points of baseball strategy and fundamentals, and become a highly skilled player by the time he enters high school. Many high school players continue playing on a select team on weekends or in the off-season. Many select players also play on their local youth league teams. There are many organizations that offer select baseball. USA Select Baseball () is one organization that governs select baseball on a national level, but there are also several local organizations as well.
