Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service (SCEMS) is the emergency medical service provider in Sedgwick County, Kansas. It is the primary agency responsible for the pre-hospital care and transportation of persons who become acutely ill or injured and are in need of ambulance transport to a hospital using Advanced Life Support ambulances. Additionally Sedgwick County EMS provides scheduled ambulance transportation services for persons who require routine transfer by ambulance based on a medical necessity. Sedgwick County EMS serves a population of approximately 477,000 in a geographic area of approximately providing 24 hour emergency medical care to all areas of Sedgwick County including the city of Wichita, Kansas. In 2010, SCEMS responded to over 50,000 calls for service. Fleet/Personnel There are 18 front line ambulances in the EMS fleet that are stationed at 15 post locations throughout the County. In addition to full-time and part-time staff, the Department receives first responder support from Volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians in Derby, and Valley Center as well as the Wichita and Sedgwick County Fire Departments. Paramedics are Kansas certified Mobile Intensive Care Technicians (MICT) providing the highest level of pre-hospital emergency care to patients. Accreditation On November 19, 2010, Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services for its compliance with national standards of excellence.
Sedgwick County EMS has become the 142nd ambulance service in the United States to successfully complete the voluntary review process, which includes completion of a comprehensive application and on-site review by national experts in emergency medical services. Sedgwick County EMS is now the only ambulance service to be accredited in the state of Kansas.
