Irish Republican Brotherhood Statement On Violence On February 6th, 2009 a unknown man stated to Northern Ireland media circles that a new terrorist group referring itself as the Irish Republican Brotherhood would begin to target drug dealers and pushers in Northern Ireland as well as target "supporters of foreign rule" directly targetting the Police Service of Northern Ireland and British military personnel in its message. Sir Hugh Orde of the Police Service in Northern Ireland on the fifth of March raised the threat level for Northern Ireland to "severe" as dissident Republican groups were poised to launch a terrorist attack on Northern Ireland government services. The Police Service of Northern Ireland stated that "the dissident threat is thought to be high ... in south and west Belfast, Newry and Mourne, south Tyrone and Strabane." On the March 9, 2009 it was stated by the Police service of Northern Ireland that they were looking at an opposition of 200 to 300 dissident Republicans who wanted to derail the 1997 peace process. Timeline February 11, 2009: Two armed men storm a house in Derry, Northern Ireland and shoot an killed a known drug pusher Jim McConnel, 38, who had just been released from prison for drug-related offences. The attack appears to be paramilitary in nature. March 7, 2009: Two gunmen disguised as pizza delivery men open fire at a United Kingdom military base in County Atrim leaving two British military personnel dead and four other people, including two soldiers seriously wounded.
