Scott Crawford

Scott B. Crawford (born 8 July 1974) is a professional trainer, counselor, and fellow of applied functional science. Crawford holds master's degrees in counseling; has completed doctoral work in somatic and sports psychology; and carries certifications in fitness, sports training, and bodywork. Founder and Director of SOMA Get Fit, a fitness company based in Santa Barbara, CA, Crawford has been practicing and teaching personal health and wellness since 1998.
Fitness Licensures
Current fitness licenses held by Crawford include certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Stott Pilates (Mat, Reformer, and V2 Max), and the Cooper Institute. Bodywork certifications come from The Body Therapy Institute’s program in massage therapy, Santa Barbara Bodyworks’ Holistic Health Practitioner program, CAMTC, and MBLEX national massage license. Crawford is a certified Hatha yoga instructor, receiving training at the White Lotus Foundation’s yoga retreat and school.
Early Life and Education
Crawford was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, where he played soccer, football, and baseball during his early school years. After graduating from Brookhaven College in 1997 with an associate degree in psychology, he attended Texas Wesleyan University on a full soccer scholarship. He graduated from The University of North Texas in 1998 with a degree in sociology and an emphasis in psychology.
Crawford attended graduate school at Dallas Theological Seminary where he completed masters degrees in theology and psychology in 2000 and 2002. He enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Santa Barbara Graduate Institute, studying clinical psychology with an emphasis in somatic psychology. He also studied clinical psychology as a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of San Diego, where he specialized in sports psychology.
Career
Crawford has been teaching and championing fitness-as-a-lifestyle for over 15 years. Drawing on his education and experience in athletics, fitness, psychology, nutrition, and bodywork, Crawford branded an approach to health, wellness, and personal training that purports to holistically integrate body, mind, and spirit by combining acute mental training with demanding but enjoyable physical exercise and cultural outings.
<big>Soccer Career</big>
Crawford attended Texas Wesleyan on a full soccer scholarship. While in college, Crawford was recruited to play the sport professionally. From 1994 to 2001, Crawford played for four pro teams: the Texas Toros, Dallas Burn, Dallas Sidekicks, and Texas Lightning.
Crawford has coached boys and girls teams for the Dallas Comets Soccer Club and the Santa Barbara Soccer Club. He earned an International Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as well as a National “A” License from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
<big>Early Career in Training and Wellness</big>
Crawford began working as a personal trainer in 2005 at 24 Hour Fitness in Santa Barbara, CA, where he became a master/elite personal trainer and group-exercise instructor. He moved to Spectrum Health in 2007 where he was a master/pro trainer and Pilates Master instructor. Crawford served as Fitness Coordinator for post-op rehab patients at the Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery Center during this time, as well as an ambassador and event organizer for Lululemon Athletica’s community-outreach athletic programs. Crawford was also hired by Santa Barbara’s Bacara Resort and Spa in 2007 as their Wellness Choreographer for Destination Transformation, a customizable long-stay wellness program for resort guests.
In 2009, Crawford moved to Platinum Fitness in Montecito/Summerland, CA, also became a fitness instructor at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. In 2010, Crawford was hired by the Sports Club/LA as a private trainer and Pilates instructor at their flagship location in West Los Angeles. Soon after, Crawford joined the West Hollywood Spa team in Sunset Plaza and Beverly Hills.
<big>SOMA Get Fit and "The Lifestyle"</big>
In effort to advance his philosophy and approach to wellness and fitness training, Scott founded SOMA Get Fit in Santa Barbara in 2007. According to the company website, SOMA Get Fit provides custom-tailored, goal-specified, integrated training, holistically combined with mental-wellness consulting, Pilates training, yoga, nutrition education, outdoor activities, and bodywork. Crawford's SOMA programs begin with in-depth health/fitness evaluations and might include beach and mountain training, sport-specific training like tennis, hikes, overnight to week-long retreats, and life-coaching services.
Crawford often hosts SOMA Get Fit Retreats for high-end, high-visibility clients and his company has been featured in several regional and national publications, including Marie Claire, Sunset, Angeleno, Santa Barbara Visitor’s Magazine, Alaska Air Magazine, and The Hollywood Reporter.
In 2011, Crawford partnered with La Prairie Switzerland Spas at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air where he instituted a wellness retreat program called “The Lifestyle by Scott Crawford.” "The Lifestyle" is composed of hour-long to day-long sessions that might include prepared meals, bodywork and physical-movement sessions, transportation to selected activities, a spa treatment, acupuncture, horseback riding, a cultural outing, an acting class, and/or further fitness classes.
"The Lifestyle" has mentions in travel-and-lifestyle websites like Urban Daddy, Travel Video News, Vital Juice LA, The Hollywood Reporter, Examiner.com, Elite Traveler, Prestige Magazine, Angeleno, Foam Magazine, and The Sunday Times Style Magazine. According to The Sunday Times Style Magazine, "The Lifestyle" program "allows guests to create a flexible timetable from a 'sky's the limit' list of classes, spa treatments and activities—everything from acting school to the latest La Prairie facial. The level of personalized TLC is like being wrapped in a luxurious comfort blanket." The Beverly Hills Hotel purchased Crawford's program in 2013 for an undisclosed price.
