Scott Ambush
A member of the Grammy-nominated super group Spyro Gyra since 1993, he is known for his versatility, sensitivity and lyrical playing. Scott is equally at home in a wide range of musical contexts, having played with such luminaries as Stanley Turrentine, Dizzy Gillespie, Omar Hakim and Special EFX; backing R&B vocalists Angela Bofil and Jeane Carne; as well as R&B jazz instrumentalists Pieces of a Dream and George Howard. Whether doing live dates with international recording artists Special EFX or recording projects with Teresa DeSio (Italy), Misato Watanabe (Japan) or world renowned drummer Mr. Hakim, Mr. Ambush's varied experiences have served him well. When not on the road, Mr. Ambush writes and performs with the highly respected Washington-based alto saxophonist Marshall Keys.
As if his amazing accomplishments were not enough, Scott went onto solving the obstacle of finding the perfect bass by building it himself. This has enabled him to tailor the features, action and overall playability to his own needs. So now in addition to being a world class musician, Scott’s also a world class Luthier building custom basses one at a time for other players. Attention to such details as winding his own pick-ups has allowed him to achieve the sound he hears in his head and the sound for which he has become known and sought after.
Scott also personally hand carved a hardwood prototype neck until it was perfect so it could be used to make the molds for his graphite reinforced composite necks. Then they are then topped with resin impregnated wood fingerboards, as well as an adjustable truss rod. The result is a dead-spot free, ultimately stable, adjustable composite neck with the feel of a limited production, hand carved instrument.
