Scoil Chaitriona

Scoil Chaitríona Senior is a co-educational primary school in Renmore, Galway, Ireland. It provides education for children from 3rd to 6th class. It is located beside Scoil Chaitríona Junior, which caters for children from Junior Infants to 2nd class. The schools are run separately from each other and have different principals and staff. However, students from the Junior School are immediately accepted into the senior school when they are going from 2nd class into 3rd.
History
Scoil Chaitríona Senior was founded on 1 July 1974. In its first year it enrolled 114 children. Mr. Pádraig O'Grady was the school's first principal. The three other teachers on the staff were Mrs. Máire Finnegan, Mrs. Maura O'Connor and Mr. Michael Kitt. As the building was not yet built, for the first year classrooms in Scoil Chaitríona Junior were used. On 1 July 1975, the 114 children and their teachers moved into their new school. Richard Burke T.D., Minister for Education, performed the official opening, and Most Rev. Dr. Michael Browne, Bishop of Galway, blessed the new complex on 26 September 1975.
The school has gone from strength to strength and now has an enrolment of approximately 400 children and 30 teachers.
School events
Scoil Chaitríona Senior is a very active school and takes part in many events and activities. The school takes part in the Galway St. Patrick's Day Parade regularly. The school's choir also hosts a carol service in the local church every Christmas.
The school is also very active in raising money for charity. A cake sale and a book blitz are held annually, with the proceeds partly going to a charity. The remainder of the money is used to help fund the school. The above-mentioned choir released a CD of Christmas carols in recent years entitled Get Christmassy with Scoil Chaitríona!. All of the proceeds were donated to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Co. Dublin.
