Saltoun road

Saltoun Road is a road in Brixton, London that runs East-West from Windrush Square. Located near Brixton Underground Station it is a busy road for pedestrians during communiting hours. The road features a traditional late 19th Century terraced Victorian housing that was built to meet the demand of the influx from the countyside.
The Effra River used to cross Saltoun Road from South towards the Thames. The river now runs under the westernmost properties of the road.
Raleigh Hall is also situated at the West end of the road and adjancent to Windrush Square. It is a listed building and legend has it that Queen Elizabeth had her affair with Sir Walter Raleigh around the area when the land was mostly used for agricultural purposes. This however, is purely anecdotal.
As with the rest of Brixton, Saltoun Road hosts a highly diverse local community. Furthermore, the road has undergone a significant transformation from being a flashpoint for drug trafficking and prostition i the 1970s and 1980s, to a quiet residential street.
