Sailor Ranko is a series of fanfiction novels by various authors and a doujinshi comedy webcomic by computer video game programmer Rebecca Heineman. The first novel was written in late 1999. The webcomic began on March 17, 2008. It is based on the characters and situations of the anime and manga of Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi and Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi.
Setting The story is set in modern day in the Minato Ward of Tokyo Japan. Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo are sent to away from their home by their parents in another attempt to get the pair to confess their feelings for each other and pressure them to marry. Ranma suffers from a Chinese curse that changes his form from male to female when doused with cold water. Hot water undos the process. Due to a pact his father made with his mother, if he is found to be unmanly, he and his father would be forced to commit seppuku. To avoid accidentally meeting his mother in the company of his schoolmate who would call him by his male name in female form, thereby exposing his feminine curse to his mother, he adopts the name Ranko and goes to great lengths to keep his new schoolmates from knowing that Ranma and Ranko are the same person.
His female alter ego meets up with the Sailor Senshi and they discover she (Ranko) is the reincarnation of Sailor Sun, a long lost Sailor Senshi. Ranma now has a triple life, one, as male Ranma trying to avoid the troubles he left behind in Nerima, two, as female Ranko who was accidentally enrolled at the same high school by her well meaning and totally oblivious-to-the-truth mother, and three, her role as Sailor Sun working with the Sailor Senshi fighting for love and justice.
=="Fukufic" popularity== Sailor Ranko is the longest running series of popular form of fanfiction named the "fukufic", so named due to the core plotline of Ranma Saotome being a member of the Sailor Senshi. "Fukufic" is derived from the Japanese word for uniform (fuku) and Fan(fic)tion. The Seifuku (School Uniform) or Fuku for short, is significant due to the uniform of a Sailor Senshi being derived from a Japanese female school uniform. The fukufic genre of fanfiction is so popular, a website with thousands of subscribers actively talk about this genre. As of November, 2008, the webcomic receives in excess of 10,000 hits a day.
Original Novels The comic is loosely based on a series of fanfiction novels written by Duncan Zillman, Kevin D. Hammel and Rebecca Heineman. The novel series began with Sailor Ranko by Duncan Zillman in 1999, followed by Twice In A Millennium by Kevin D. Hammel in 2000. Rebecca Heineman added Sailor Ranko: Tunnel Vision in 2002, Sailor Ranko: Just Add Water in 2003, Sailor Ranko: The Harder They Fall in 2004, Sailor Ranko: A Love Story 2008 and is currently working on Sailor Ranko: Thrice In A Millennium (2008?). The novel series is maintained in Russian by someone using the nickname "Cheb".
