Rochelle Porteous

Rochelle Porteous is an Australian politician. Porteous is Mayor of the Municipality of Leichhardt and was the NSW Greens candidate for the seat of Balmain in the 2007 NSW state election. She is a Councillor on Leichhardt Council, Australia.
Background
Rochelle Porteous has been a Leichhardt Councillor since 2004 and became mayor in 2011. She has worked as a teacher, interpreter, filmmaker, an economic development manager, a consultant and has run small businesses.
She holds diplomas in media production, teaching and training, a degree in Geography/Psychology and speaks fluent Spanish and Italian.
Porteous campaigned to save Callan Park and is now campaigning to save Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital, situated on the grounds of Callan Park. She has been a leading figure in speaking out against expanding of Sydney's M4 motorway with the addition of an M4 East, and has led the fight against mobile phone tower installations near schools and childcare centres.
Porteous is a committed environmentalist and has taken the lead in getting Council to adopt an Urban Forest Policy and to fight climate change.

She has been a leading figure against building the White Bay Cement Terminal and has driven the development of community-led strategic planning for the Inner West Harbour.
Porteous has been an active campaigner in the refugee movement for a number of years and developed the Asylum Seeker Support Worker project, now funded by six Sydney Councils.
Porteous was born and grew up in Newcastle. She has lived in Balmain, one of Sydney's older suburbs, and Leichhardt for the last 7 years.
