Reporter is a weekly magazine run by students at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Its first issue was released on March 22, 1951 in newspaper form. It changed to magazine format in January 1969 and is now a full color magazine, the only weekly college publication of its kind in the United States. Reporter is known for annual innovative issues and has occasionally been pulled off the stands for racy content. Innovation Each May 2, 2008 Me Issue featured a different individual portrait of one of thousands of RIT students. As a result, the publication won a Xerox PIXI Award. On January 30, 2009, the Crowdsourcing Issue was released. The content for the issue was generated entirely by readers, first using a UserVoice account to generate article ideas, then with a wiki on the magazine's website for the actual composition of articles . The cover was part of a collaborative contest, where all contest entries were eventually layered on top of one another. Traditionally, Reporter releases an annual April Fools' issue known as Distorter. In 2009, the issue was pulled off of the stands for offensive material. The cover was in the style of Cosmopolitan magazine and featured a busty woman with RIT President William Destler's face photoshopped on to hers. Its release took place on an RIT Accepted Student Open House Day. The Reporter advisory board voted to have the issue available on stands once the open house was over, but Destler voted to have it available only for pickup from the Reporter office. In addition, the issue was also removed from the magazine's website. Several groups currently exist on Facebook where PDFs of the issue can still be downloaded.
