RDB Consulting is an outsource IT and Consulting company based in Johannesburg, South Africa <ref name="About" />. The owner and founder called the company RDB Consulting. The name stands for Relational Database and was started in 1995. Over the years it has evolved into a database outsourcing and consulting company with Linux/UNIX support.
Most economists agree that South Africa’s skills shortage poses a significant limitation to the country’s long-term economic growth plan <ref name="SkillsShortage" />, especially regarding managerial, professional and technical skills. RDB Consulting’s core focus is to provide a cost-effective solution to the skills shortage in the IT sector by offering outsourced database administration and consulting <ref name="DatabaseAdmin" />.
RDB Consulting specializes in four areas: relational databases, operating systems, monitoring and enterprise resource planning. Under the umbrella of IT Outsourcing, the company offers managed services such as Oracle, Oracle’s eBusiness Suite, Sybase, MS SQL, Unix, Linux and Windows Server <ref name="OperatingSystem" />. RDB Consulting’s outsourcing model also includes key resource support <ref name="KeyResource" />, where one of their Database Administrators would provide technical support when a company’s key personnel go on leave, don’t have the necessary capacity or skills, are sick or resign.

History
Founder and CEO Jaroslav Cerny realized there was a great opportunity to meet the real consumer need in terms of flexible, specialized “IT skills on tap” <ref name="Outsourcers" /> and started the company in 1995. Companies often cannot afford to hire full time resources to administer every aspect of the IT environment, which is why he set out to provide outsourced Database Administration that can implement new systems and help out with various tasks (such as monitoring and disaster recovery) as need be.
The company focuses on providing service-based solutions as opposed to “time and material” services. RDB Consulting provides technical solutions for their clients, such as Oracle’s suite of database security solutions <ref name="Oracle" />, in-house developed pro-active monitoring and comprehensive site documentation and health checks. Some of RDB Consulting’s largest clients <ref name="Clients" /> include MTN, Vodacom, Harmony Gold, British American Tobacco, Sappi, uBank, Oasis and Barloworld Logistics. The outsource business model <ref name="OutsourcingModel" /> that RDB Consulting offers provides these clients 24/7 IT support and standby (with full escalation callout procedures), knowledge retention through full site documentation that reduces HR problems such as skills retention.
In 2009 the company appointed Ken Jarvis (Jika Africa), a well-known IT change-agent who has successfully assisted in transforming major organizations such as the South African Revenue Services (SARS) into world-class organizations <ref name="Jika" />, to assist the company to gear for growth. RDB Consulting also appointed Alain Michel (ex CEO Atos) as a business advisor in 2010.
