Randy Hekman

Randy Hekman (born Randall John Hekman on May 9, 1947) declared his candidacy in March, 2011, for the United States Senate seat currently held by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. Hekman is a member of the Republican Party.
Early life, education and career
Hekman was born in Grand Rapids to John and Mary Lou Hekman. He is the second of four children. He attended Wheaton Academy High School (Wheaton, Illinois) and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a BS in Management in 1969. He then received his JD in Law from The George Washington University Law School in 1972.
He also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1972. Hekman was assigned to the Office of the Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy in the Pentagon where he developed policies for computer systems in the Department of Defense.
Hekman returned to Grand Rapids to take on the job of Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Kent County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. He left the job when elected in 1975 as Probate-Juvenile Judge in the Kent County Probate Court, a position he held for 15 years.
Hekman left the judge's bench to start and become Executive Director of the Michigan Family Forum based in Lansing, Michigan. He led the non-profit research and education organization from 1990 to 1996. Hekman then served as Executive Director of CBH Ministries for six years before taking on the role of Executive Pastor at Crossroads Bible Church, a non-denominational church, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He left this position in 2011 to run for office full time.
Other Interests
Since 1996 Hekman has had an ongoing interest in alternate energy research and technology. He formed Hekman Industries that year to provide energy research and consultation, particularly in the growing area of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). Mistakenly called "cold fusion" by some, scientists now understand this process, while nuclear, involves neither fusion nor fission. Because of its nature, LENR does not require heavy shielding nor does it produce radioactive waste.
Political Positions
Randy Hekman runs as a Republican. The key planks of his U.S. Senate campaign are:
* Balance federal budget expeditiously through a reduction in the enormous size of government without raising taxes.
* Take aggressive action to pay off our staggering $14+ trillion deficit now, through cost cutting, not raising taxes.
* Deal realistically with astronomically large unfunded entitlements liabilities in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
* Encourage the non-profit sector to greatly increase its contribution to human need caused by the federal government's major reductions; consider a nominal tax credit for individuals who contribute at least 10 percent of their gross income to non-profit entities.
Personal Life
Randy Hekman married Marcia Bealer of Fenton, Illinois, in 1969. They have 12 children, ages 17 to 39, and 19 grandchildren. Their children are: Michelle, Renee, Alicia, Marianne, David, Suzanne, John, Scott, Laurie, Daniel, Angela and Nathan. Each of the ten Hekman children who has graduated from college attended a different college from his or her siblings.
