Dr Raghunath Singh Thakur, or Dr R. S. Thakur, Ph.D. (Cantab) Ph. D. (Del) is a former Director, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, CSIR, India. Thakur is an eminent scientist who was the Director of CIMAP (Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants at Lucknow of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) where he led the research and discovered artemisinin and its derivatives as antimalarial drugs. His work on medicinal plants includes more than 250 papers and several patents. After studying at Delhi University he went to King’s College, Cambridge and earned his Ph.D. in 1963 under Prof Lord Todd, a Nobel Laureate. He is the first Indian to be awarded the Ramsay Memorial Award.
