Psychophysical Therapy

Psychophysical Therapy is a form of alternative therapy which supposedly works on the bio-energetic field of the body. It purports to safely release blockages in the energy field produced by mental, emotional or physical traumas. Proponents say it can produce a feeling of lightness and well-being that follows from the freedom of the bio-energy flowing through the whole system. The treatment method maintains that many diseases and illnesses manifest first as an imbalance in the bio-energetic field before being expressed as physical symptoms. Clinical Psychophysics was developed by Dr. James McGarry at the Academy of Human Sciences, and many of the principles and methods have been used in mind-body therapies, such as Somatic Experiencing, the Hakomi Method, sensorimotor psychotherapy, Rubenfield Synergy, Integrative Body Psychotherapy, and Physical Psychology.
Attributes and methods
Healing is a natural process that takes place when barriers to health are removed. The Psychophysical therapist ensures that the bio-energy flows freely so that the person can allow themselves to become well.
Psychophysical Therapy consists of four basic treatment types:
* Removing blocks due to accidents and surgical shock, restoring the vitality & promoting healing of the body
* Building up and opening channels blocked since birth or early childhood so that they can contain a full charge of bio-energy
* Release of emotional blockages caused by past traumatic events without the need to relive them
* Maintenance of good health by cleaning and balancing the bio-energy of the person to encourage maximum well-being
Disrobing is required during psychophysical therapy because metal (rings, ear-rings, etc) purportedly interfere significantly with the bio-energy field. Similarly, nylon and other synthetics in fabrics, even those that claim to be all cotton or wool, supposedly distort and unbalance the bio-energy field to varying degrees. This can give a false indication of the way the bio-energy is flowing. Patients are not expected to remove their underpants.
Psychophysical Therapy is considered safe as it involves no drugs or surgery, and no pain. It purports to rebalance the body’s natural energies. A psychophysical therapist may also suggest other treatments (including orthodox medicine) if warranted.
Most Psychophysical therapists charge the recommended fee set by the Psychophysical Therapists Guild of Australia. A session can last up to an hour (and occasionally longer), the fee is not subject to time. If a patient has a referral from his or her G.P. with a Mental Health Care Plan, he or she can claim a Medicare rebate from Medicare Australia offices. This is only applies to psychophysical therapists who are also registered psychologists.
Qualifications of therapists
Psychophysical therapists has full membership to the Psychophysical Therapists Guild of Australia. To qualify for membership the therapist must have completed, a graduate diploma in both clinical psychophysics and clinical and humanistic hypnotherapy from the Academy of Human Sciences. In some cases the therapist has also completed a post graduate diploma in one or both of these modalities. All therapists have current Senior First Aid certification, and professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
