Protopia is a term used by Kevin Kelly to describe a futuristic society that improves itself through slow but continuous progress. Protopia is often used by Kelly to illustrate the technological progress of and impact on the future society. According to Kelly, while utopia is unrealistic due to its own flaws, dystopia is unsustainable because chaos tend to become self-organized, so "the big bandits keep the small bandits to a minimum." Like our smart phones that update once a while and make our life easier by a little at a time, all technology will improve our lives in such manner. In 2016, philosopher Laurens Martens has also illustrated this term in his blogger, defining that: "Protopia is a state that today is better than yesterday, although it might be only a little better."
