Prevention of nuclear war

Nuclear war is a threat to the entire race of man. Mankind has developed weapons which have the potential to wipe out the entire human race. For further information on what a nuclear war would look like, watch this video:video

A world government

A world government would be good because it would have the power to solve global problems, making the world a better place. A world government would have the main power in the world, enabling it to accomplish practically anything. This would only go wrong if the government was corrupt, but the outcome of a corrupt government would not be as bad as if there was no world government at all.

What a world government would be

A world government would essentially be what the U.S. is now, but just to a larger scale. After the revolutionary war ended, America was composed of separate colonies connected (governed) only by Continental Congress, which had little power (We the People, 20). The colonies represent the separate countries, connected by organizations such as the United Nations, which do not have very much real power. After the U.S. constitution was ratified and put into order, the U.S. was, and is now, like what a world government would be. There is a strong central government that has the main authority over all of the states, the states representing countries connected by one world government that has control over all of them. The central government has most of the power, but the hierarchy continues into (governments of individual states, governments of individual counties, governments of individual cities, and so on). No state has their own army, but there is a body of law enforcers, policemen. A world government would similarly have one army or law enforcing body controlled by the central government, letting no group of individuals have their own army. A world government would be different from the U.S. because it would have control over the entire world not just a portion of it, but the systematic plane would be the same.

Why it would be good

Giving ultimate power to a central, world government would be beneficial to the people of the world as a whole because it could potentially solve all problems in the international community. It would have the money, forces, and power to execute almost all duties it was responsible for and enforce any laws it wished.
One of the most important problems a world government could solve is violence. The world has had world wars before, and has found out how to create and use nuclear weapons. If there was a conflict that were to elevate so much into a full out nuclear war, the results could be permanently devastating, it could possibly wipe out the majority of human beings on the face of the earth. This is only one of almost infinite reasons why violence is a bad thing. Because the world government would have more power (in a military sense) than any individual group of people who have a common ideology (group of people who would be likely to create an upraising or conflict together), a world government would be able to defuse any type of violent rebellion. Nations today have civil wars, but that is because the nation is divided up into fewer groups of people, making each one more powerful, and possibly able to start a rebellion resulting in a civil war. Nationalists argue that the UN was not able to prevent WWI and a world government would therefore not be able to either ( Contributors, 4), but this is not the case. The UN had no actual power, but relied on their influence on nations of the world. A world government would not have only influence, but it would have the actual power because it would have an army of peace-keeping law enforcers.
Another problem that a world government could potentially solve is poverty. One main reason for poverty in the world is that some nations don’t have as much money, while some nations have very much wealth. A world government would be able to open these pockets of wealth and redistribute them to the poorer parts of the world. After all, the world government would be able to decide how the taxes are used, and could put this money into charities or schools (to give people without an education an education that could get them a job that would give them a good future). Removing poverty would not only help the poorest people in the world, but it would also give everyone an at least reasonable education, which would speed up the advancement of the world a whole.
All of the solutions that a world government has to the problems of the world would involve giving up some rights to protect other rights. One would give up the right to kill and gain power over others by means of violence, but at the same time, protecting their right to live and not be affected by violence. The wealthy people in the world would be giving up to right to that extra ten dollars a month, but protecting the right to not live in poverty. Some people would be giving up rights, but the majority of the population of the world would be benefiting from this.

What could go wrong

A world government would be beneficial for the most part, but if the government went corrupt, none of these benefits would be seen and things could go wrong. For one, there is a slim chance that the government would become corrupt. This is because the world has learned the do's and don’ts of governments, and would be able to devise a system in which the actual power is spread out among many officials, like in the Roman Republic (Carr). Also, impeachment is always an option for the citizens, like in the U.S., making a corrupt government easily correctable. It is important to realize that even if it is unlikely to happen, the government still could go bad, but the negative effects of this wouldn’t be as bad as the world being destroyed by nuclear war, which is a path that could be taken without a world government.

Overview

A world government would be good because it would have the power to solve problems of the world, making the world a better place. Some of the problems it could solve are poverty and violence, which are two problems that can’t be fixed by the world the way it is now. From here on out, all we can do is dream about if or when this will ever happen.
