Prairiewood High School Rugby Program

Rugby was introduced at Prairiewood High School in Sydney, Australia in 1999, and since that time the school has achieved high levels of success, both on an individual and team level. The team's kit is similar the Wallabies Rugby Team, Below is a list of some of the school’s major Rugby achievements:

Due to the schools rugby team having such great success throughout the 2007 & 2008 seasons, Prairiewood's first XV coach, Jarred Hodges sent off a application to the Australian Football School's Union to apply for the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament. Out of every school in the country Prairiewood was selected for their brief but successful history.

Unfortunately due to the tough economic times the schools officials are worries that the boys would not make it to the tournament to be held in Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Japan. The team has appeared on Channel 7 & SBS News, the have also appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald & Fairfield Advance, in an attempt to help raise funds for their trip.

2007

Buchan Shield Final
On Sunday, 9th September 2007, Prairiewood's Year 9 and 10 Rugby Union team travelled to T.G. Millner Oval at Eastwood, to battle it out for the Buchan Shield against The Hills Sports High School. During the tournament The Hills Sports High School amass a very impressive for-and-against tally of 365 to 32, they defeated Granville Boys 74-0, Crestwood High 79-0, Homebush Boys 71-7, Mereweather High 76-5 and Farrer Agricultural College (Tamworth) 43-3 in earlier rounds of the competition.

The game started and Prairiewood High School did not get off to a good start, with Hills Sports scoring the 1st try in the first 10 minutes of the game. But the Prairiewood team did not give up, striking back with a try by Barnabas Tavui-Leota, set up by Terry Hall. Hills Sports High School were about to score again but a courageous tackle by Jonathon Masiasomua stopped that from happening but unfortunately Jonathon was sidelined for the rest of the game because of an injury sustained by that tackle. Right on half-time Michael Luong scored a magnificent try off a line-out set up by Jarrod Markovina. The score at half-time was 17-12.

The second half began and Prairiewood once again got off to a bad start with Hills Sports High School scoring the first try making the score 22-12. Prairiewood struck back with a try scored by Ray Luangamath down the sideline making the score 22-17.

The Prairiewood team weren't going to go down without a fight, spending the last five minutes of the game attacking Hills Sports High School’s defensive line. The boys were under pressure and made poor decisions turning over possession, which ended the nail biting match. The full-time score was 22-17 with The Hills Sports High School coming out the winners

In summary, the schools brief but very successful Rugby history reflects the high standards set and achieved by our students and teams. It has become rare for local government schools to succeed in major competitions. The players continue to work intensively on all elements of the game, and are as talented as the successful 2003 team that made the final of the Waratah Shield.
