Established in 2012, Power Matters Alliance is a community of global industry leaders, government agencies and energy-efficiency groups dedicated to rethinking power for the 21st century. The group, founded within the IEEE's Industry Connection program, is seeking to create an "Internet of Power" incorporating communications, networking, accessibility, and new infrastructure through which to power devices intelligently and safely. Vint Cerf, the chief Internet evangelist for Google, is the honorary chairman of the group. The PMA focuses its activities around three core principles: 1. A way to manage power that is "smart:" utilizing "nanogrids," in which a variety of surfaces with embedded power can act as "hot spots" to power devices. The group aims to define an intelligent digital layer of managed power above today's analog one. 2. PMA strives to be part of an industry-wide shift towards DC current. DC is widely accepted as a core enabler of energy efficiency and cost savings. PMA aims to promote policies and practices that contribute to energy efficiency and education. 3. PMA aims to flesh out a suite of standards in order to improve the user experience and provide advanced wireless power to devices at home and on the move. PMA envisions a wireless power ecosystem that spans mobile, computing, in-car, consumer electronics, smart batteries, household power, and power-in-public-places.
