Populationist

Populationist is a term that first appeared in Edward C. Hartman's 2006 book, The Population Fix (Breaking America's Addiction to Population Growth) and received additional exposure during a radio interview conducted by Roger Wendell, with Hartman, during a September 2008 broadcast at KGNU.

Hartman's book describes "Populationist" as an umbrella term for the many different views about what should be done relative to the huge population problem unfolding in America, India, China, and the rest of the world.

Although never precisely defined, some of the goals of a populationist could be:

* Stabilizing the world's population below 6 billion or, stablizing America's population below 300 million, or both.

Suggestions for attaining these goals have included:

* Improving education and/or governance in developing countries. Increasing family planning funding domestically and/or internationally. Reforming immigration policies in America.

Hartman suggested that there were many views about the concern over population growth but no two concerns were exactly alike - therefore the term populationist could be used to describe anyone with concerns about population issues in general.
