Polar Nights is the debut novel from UK travel writer Simon Hacker. Published by ThornBerry Publishing and available through Amazon from February 2013, it is a dark comedy set in and around the Sutherland fishing village of Tongue, on Scotland's north coast. The novel includes themes of global warming, Scottish nationalism, anthropomorphism and trophy hunting and is an adult/teen fiction work. Synopsis Hitching a ride on a freak iceberg, a polar bear washes up on the north coast of Scotland - and immediately adapts to a human diet. Terrified but intent on getting a media scoop, TV journalist Rebecca Riposte is dispatched on its trail. But so, too, is the malignant Lord Tobias von Hindmarch - a man hell-bent on completing his collection of hunting trophies and desperate to settle an old score against the species. Meanwhile, "independent" scientist Dr Dan Travis flies in, his mission to play down the implications of the iceberg and save the government's ailing green reputation. On her quest to the bear's final destination, Rebecca is forced to rely upon the help offered by a police officer with a scarred and murky past; equally, after he falls for Rebecca and resolves to help her, Dan finds his only route to her is from the guiding hand of a mountain guide with a sinister motive. As the characters converge on the trail, truths are revealed which suggests polar bears may be the least they should fear.
