Ipswich Town
Balkestein joined Ipswich on trial at the end of the 2007/08 season and impressed manager Jim Magilton in that time. He played in the end of season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur where Magilton was impressed with Balkestein's attitude towards the game. On June 16th 2008 Balkestein signed a two year contract with the option of a third year, a fee of £100,000 was paid to former club SC Heerenveen as compensation.

Magilton told the club's official website upon signing Balkestein. "We are delighted to have Pim at this club, He wasn't fazed by mixing it up with the first-team players when he came over for a trial with us. He is a confident lad who is aggressive in his play and has a cultured left foot. He is 6ft 3in, is an organiser, can pass a ball and is someone who is desperate for an opportunity. Pim shows a belief in himself that he can come to Ipswich Town and make a real difference here and I like that. I think he has all the ingredients to have a bright future."
