Pico ISV

A Pico ISV (abbr. pISV) is an independent software vendor consisting of only part-time developers. It typically consists of one or two software developers working in the company (or proto-company) while still keeping their regular full-time positions typically in a larger company. In many respects, a Pico ISV is similar to a Micro ISV differing only in the level of time committed in enhancing, maintaining, and marketing the organization's products. Thus a Pico ISV is smaller than Micro ISV.
The Pico ISV is a safer (although probably slower) route for a developer to entrepreneurship as the developer is still keeping his/her primary job to fall-back to in case the venture fails. Furthermore the start-up funds for the organization is most likely obtained from the founder's savings and day job and thus the founder need not to relinquish control to external investors.
This approach of part-time entrepreneurship is spearheaded among others by Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert series of cartoons. Mr Adams developed Dilbert in his spare time while still keeping his day job at Pacific Bell.
