Peter Catanzariti Peter Frank Catanzariti (born 31 August 1982 in Sydney, Australia) is a Liberal Party representative and political staffer for Federal Shadow Attorney-General, Senator The Hon George Brandis SC.
Political Career
His career kicked off on the Gold Coast working for the Member for Moncrieff, Steve Ciobo MP in 2004. He worked on the successful 2004 re-election campaign and was being touted as a possible candidate for the Liberal Party in the QLD State Electoral district of Gaven. The Liberals however gave up the opportunity to run in the seat during negotiations with the QLD National Party. The Liberal Party re-assigned Mr Catanzariti to the office of The Hon Peter Dutton MP.
He joined the American Association of Political Consultants in 2006 and continued his rise through the Liberal Party ranks.
He joined then joined the Office of the Hon Gary Hardgrave MP, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister in 2006.
2007 would not be a good year for Hardgrave and, in turn, for Catanzariti either. Constantly defending his boss, Gary Hardgrave was dumped from the Ministry in January 2007. In March 2007, Mr Hardgrave was embroiled in a controversy when he took his secretary on a taxpayer funded junket to Taiwan. Also in March, Hardgrave would again hit the headlines when he came under investigation by the AFP for allegedly employing a ‘phantom’ staffer.
Catanzariti, Hardgrave’s office manager at the time, would hit the headlines later in July when he was suddenly sacked. A loyal and respected QLD Coalition staffer, it was rumoured that his sacking was due to Hardgrave’s displeasure at Catanzariti for telling his staff to co-operate fully with the AFP investigations. Catanzariti would not comment in the media on the incident.
While Hardgrave lost the Division of Moreton in the Australian Federal Election, 2007Catanzariti moved on to the Office of Senator The Hon George Brandis SC and Minister for Sports and Arts.
Catanzariti continues to work for Senator the Hon George Brandis SC, who is now Shadow Attorney-General.
