Paulina Eliza Phelps

Paulina Eliza Phelps Lyman (March 20, 1827 - October 8, 1912) was a Mormon pioneer who served as a doctor and surgeon. She studied obstetrics under Ellis Reynolds Shipp and was a wife of the early Mormon leader Amasa Mason Lyman.
Early life
Phelps was born to Morris Charles Phelps and his wife Laura in Lawrence, Illinois, who were early members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. When she was five Phelps was one of several children who were blessed by Joseph Smith; Smith stated that they would "go to the Rocky Mountains". On June 1, 1835 Phelps was baptized in Crooked River, Missouri.
Marriage and family
Phelps married Amasa Mason Lyman on January 16, 1846; the couple's first child was born in Winter Quarters during the Mormon Exodus; Phelps later had another six children. Not long after the birth of her first child, Phelps was hired to drive a wagon over the Mormon Trail as part of the Willard Richards' Company of 1848. In October 1848 she reached Salt Lake City, Utah. Nine years later she moved to Parowan, and lived in the town until she died at the age of 85. While in Parowan she studied obstetrics under Ellis Reynolds Shipp; she later delivered more than 500 babies.
