Patrick McKeown is a Buteyko practitioner based in Ireland. He was a severe chronic asthmatic for most of his life until 1998 when he applied the Buteyko method for his own condition. The Buteyko Method was developed by Russian Dr. Konstantin Buteyko. His method was specifically developed to enable the reversal of chronic hyperventilation. Buteyko was one of the first Medical Doctors to recognize the role of hyperventilation in contributing to diseases of modern man. In Buteyko’s own words “Western doctors have now either stopped looking for the sources of asthma, angina and high blood pressure or have faulty ideas of them. That is why these illnesses are still incurable. Deep breathing turned out to be the root of about 150 ailments, including cancer, as is seen now. Out of 30,000 human disorders 150 develop due to hyperventilation. We have administered a grandiose synthesis of ailments to prove that asthma, epilepsy, high blood pressure, angina, infarction, stroke and haemmorrhoidal eczema are the symptoms of the deep breathing disease. If patients have these illnesses, they get cured of them, as was proven by the Leningrad and Moscow approbations. Some patients who were diagnosed asthma had all in all up to twenty-thirty diseases. Our method healed them all, having made them 100% healthy people.” After McKeown experienced what he calls a life changing improvement to his own asthma, he decided to train as a practitioner so that he could help others. In 2002, he completed his training at the Buteyko Clinic of Moscow and was accredited by the Late Professor Buteyko. In 2005, he was accredited and authorized by the Buteyko clinic to teach and accredit Practitioners. McKeown works full time teaching the method as part of Asthma Care Ireland clinics which he founded in 2002. He has also trained a number of practitioners in the UK, Canada, Hungary, Denmark and Finland. McKeown has also written three books including the highly popular Asthma free naturally which is published by Harper Thorsons. His other books which are self help books are Close Your Mouth and ABC to be Asthma Free. In 2008, VIVAS Healthcare an independent Health insurance company based in Ireland added the AsthmaCare clinics to its members’ health benefits.
