Patience Bacon Miller (1623-1716) is the first recorded woman physician and surgeon in America, a colonist, before the Revolutionary War. . She was the daughter of William Bacon (1593-1653) and Martha Worchester (1597-1666) born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. She married William Miller (1620-1681) on 03 Mar 1640 or 1641 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Miller was the first cousin of Lord Francis Bacon (1561-1626) and the great granddaughter of James Bacon, Sheriff of London (1509-1573). Dr. Patience Miller is the first recorded woman physician and surgeon in America and a founder of Northampton, Massachusetts. She is mentioned in A history of the town of Northfield, Massachusetts : for 150 years", where she is listed as the wife of William Miller, and described as "a skilful physician and surgeon and the only doctor at N during its first two settlements."
